LORUTARU is a set of motifs, originating from the honored tradition of the Umbrian maiolica, updated to meet the aesthetics of today.
lnspired by the medieval decorations of Umbrian pottery, l wanted to remain faithful to the traditional themes and motifs which date back centuries. While reinterpreting the recognizable decorational elements through my own design aesthetics, l stil wanted the decoration to be identifiable to the characteristic artistic style of the Umbria region. Although the roots of the motifs can be traced back to the Middle Ages, the LORUTARU decoration still has a fresh and novel feel and is not tied to a certain place or time.
The simplicity and a sort of symmetry of the individual motifs give the decoration a modern look that feels very timeless yet up-to-date at the same time. Due to the versatile nature of the decoration, an artifact decorated with these motifs can be made as simple or as complex as desired.
lt is possible to combine the motifs in a number of different ways since they are designed to always fit together. The motifs can also be placed in any angular directon which leaves the options open to a various range of objects and shapes. The dimensions of the motifs (plate 3) act as suggestions more than instructions. With the same decorative elements, it is possible to create for example two completely different vases, which stili belong to the same product family. With the tiles of the same family, it is possible to create a patchwork of your own choice and style.
From a customer's point of view, it is very appealing to have more variations of the same decoration which makes the decoration also commercially viable.
The general shapes of the motifs are rather geometrical leaving space for the art of hand-painting. l wanted to make sure the motifs may be accomplished by hand using maiolica technique.
I preferred to keep the color scheme simple. The bicolor palette is based on the traditional colors of copper green and manganese black. Having few colors will enhance the modern yet timeless feel of the decoration.
